Why are fewer candidates shortlisted for IFS Mains this year?

If you look at the previous records, you will notice a huge drop in the number of qualified students. In 2025, UPSC cleared 2,116 candidates for the Forest Service Mains. But for 2026, only 1,046 candidates have passed the screening test. Why did this happen?

The main reason behind this sharper decline is the lower number of vacant seats. UPSC notified only 80 vacancies for the Indian Forest Service this year compared to 150 vacancies last year. Because of this shrinking funnel, the screening became very tight and the cut-off is expected to be on a higher side. It shows that our aspirants had to fight for every single mark!

How to check your UPSC IFS Pre Result 2026 step by step?

Checking your result on the official website is very simple. You just need to follow these basic instructions to access the merit list on your computer or mobile screen:

  • First, go to the official website of the commission at upsc.gov.in.
  • Look at the right side of the homepage and check the "What's New" section.
  • Click on the link titled "Written Result: Indian Forest Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2026".
  • A fresh PDF file will open on your web browser which contains list of selected roll numbers.
  • Download this PDF to your local device for saving it safely.
  • Press Ctrl + F if you are using laptop, or click on the search icon on mobile app, then type your Roll Number.

If your roll number lights up or appears in the document, hearty congratulations! You have cleared one of the toughest preliminary exams in India.

What are the upcoming important steps for selected candidates?

Please remember that clearing the Prelims is just a qualifying stage. Your candidature remains provisional until you complete all the stages properly. UPSC will release the Detailed Application Form (DAF-I) for the Indian Forest Service (Main) Examination separately on their website very soon.

It is mandatory for all qualified candidates to log in into the portal during the specific window to reconfirm their data and pay the required mains exam fee. If you fail to submit your details before deadline, your e-admit card for the written descriptive test will not be generated, and you won't be allowed to sit for the exam.

Note regarding marks & cut-offs: UPSC explicitly mentioned that individual marksheet, final answer keys, and official cut-off marks will not be released right now. All these details will only be published online after the entire selection process (including Mains and Interviews) gets completed and the final results are declared.
